In fact, the Redmond tech giant is working on a new feature that will make Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) and web apps feel more native. If we made you curious, know that this new option lets users set Edge to open links in associated Progressive Web Apps or installed web apps. Just to make sure you got the big picture, you can set your browser to open the YouTube PWA after clicking a YouTube link.
Open links from Edge with PWAs
Users started sharing evidence about this new feature via Reddit, explaining that it can be enabled right now through a flag in Edge Canary. Actually, searching for Enable opening support links within installed web apps should make the option appear within edge://flags in Edge. If you are a developer, you can already register apps to open when an associated link is clicked in Edge, but this new feature works with websites installed as applications. There are some that believe that the option may bypass the need for developers to register their web apps as link handlers. As if this information didn’t seem official enough, an entry on the Edge Insider feature roadmap appears to refer to the same feature. Starting in Microsoft Edge version 97, you can opt into launching the browser in a PWA rather than the full native browser, according to the roadmap post. Work never stops at Microsoft, as engineers have to always come up with new and innovative solutions, while also keeping a safe online environment. Just recently, the Redmond-based tech giant fixed a bug that was actually preventing users from upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11. If you opted for Edge instead of one of the other browsers out there, you should be pretty happy with how Microsoft is handling it. Excited about all the new features coming to Edge?
